It is one of the most important towns in the plain south of Bergamo and stands at the center of a crossroads of roads and railways connecting it to Bergamo, Milan and other important cities of Lombardy. The origins of Treviglio are very ancient: the town developed in the 10th and 11th centuries around the fortified castle founded during the period of barbarian invasions by inhabitants of three Roman villas—Portoli, Pisgnano and Cusarola. Historic shops and artisan workshops bring the historic center to life, and the protagonist in the central square is the Basilica di San Martino, an important church dedicated to the Saint of Tours.
