
The Sanctuary of Treviglio ---
In 1522, when French troops threatened to conquer and plunder Treviglio, a small town in the Bergamo plain, a miraculous event occurred: an image of the Madonna and Child, painted on the wall of the small bell tower in the convent church of the Augustinian nuns, began to weep tears. The French general Odet de Foix, faced with the miraculous image, laid down his helmet and sword, and so did his soldiers. Thus Treviglio was spared from plunder and destruction. From that year on, the last day of February became a solemn celebration for all the inhabitants of Treviglio. About sixty years after the miracle, in 1583, at the behest of Saint Charles Borromeo, the authentication procedure began, which was completed in 1591 when it was decided to build the sanctuary.
