The Roggia Curna is part of the complex irrigation system of the Bergamo area, developed both within the city and throughout the provincial territory. The history of Bergamo's rogge (irrigation channels) is very long: their presence proved necessary already in antiquity because of Bergamo's peculiar hydrography, which never had a natural watercourse close enough to meet its needs and therefore had to plan the redirection of water sources from more distant locations. The canals built for this purpose became decisive for the city's development, also influencing its urban layout.
