Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows ---

The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows is located in Borgo Santa Caterina in the lower part of the city of Bergamo. The history of the church is linked to the extraordinary event of the apparition of a star that illuminated the fresco of the Sorrowful Madonna placed on the facade of a dwelling, where the Sanctuary was subsequently built. Work on the construction of the Sanctuary was completed in 1605 and the following year the wooden sculpture of the Sorrowful Madonna was created, an exact copy of the fresco, which is still carried in procession through the streets of the borough on August 18, the day that commemorates the miraculous event of the Apparition.
