Cistern of Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe ---
With a capacity of 1,800 cubic meters of water, it is one of three large cisterns in Bergamo Alta, along with those of Piazza Mascheroni and Fontanone. Situated below the level of the square, it was fed by the Magistral aqueduct: from here the aqueduct's course continued down via Porta Dipinta to supply the fountain of the same name. The reservoir was born from a project by architect Alessio Agliardi, who established that water should be drawn through an opening that opened onto the square. The opening was replaced with the current fountain in 1795, to facilitate the passage of carts and carriages.
