Nestled in a remote area, among trees and rocks; in the background the jagged profile of the surrounding mountains, the sanctuary overlooks a landscape that combines peace and prayer. This mystical place originated during the period of struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, between 1350 and 1440. To escape violence, some inhabitants of the area hide in a 'corna busa', which in dialect means natural cavity. One of them carries with him a wooden statuette of the Madonna, but forgets it in the atrium of the cave when, having escaped danger, he returns to the village. The cult of the Madonna della Grotta, only later called "Madonna della Cornabusa", dates to a subsequent era, when a deaf-mute girl, who ended up there while tending sheep, discovers the statue and miraculously recovers her voice and hearing.
