Porta Sant'Alessandro ---
The gate of the Venetian Walls facing west is called Sant'Alessandro and constituted the access to the city for those arriving from Lecco and Como. Its name derives from the nearby basilica dedicated to Bergamo's patron saint and demolished in 1561, as recalled by a plaque placed next to the only surviving column of the basilica, to allow the construction of the Walls. Crossing the gate, one still encounters today the "Colonna di Sant'Alessandro" which marks the exact location where the cathedral once stood before being demolished.
