After Italian Unification, it marks the transfer of political power from the Città Alta to the Città Bassa. The project is by Pier Antonio Preda, the bas-reliefs on the façade are by Pagani, Ceruti and Maironi, while inside there are mythological frescoes by Giovan Battista Castello.
