Bergamo is famous worldwide for its Venetian Walls, dating back to the sixteenth century and still visible today in all their grandeur. However, you should know that already in the medieval period, the powerful Visconti family that ruled Bergamo (as well as, among others, Milan) had the so-called "Muraine" built: a defensive wall to protect the boroughs that had developed over the centuries along the routes connecting the city to nearby towns. This work completed the fortifications built on the hills, where the Castello di San Vigilio crowned the city's defensive system.
