
Church of Sant'Alessandro in colonna ---
Legend has it that Sant'Alessandro, patron saint of Bergamo, was beheaded in the very place where this imposing pillar now stands. Reconstructed in 1618 using fragments of stone from Roman monuments, it also represents the only surviving testimony of the cathedral dedicated to the Saint in the 4th century, which was later demolished. The church you see today, on whose forecourt the column rises, dates back to 1447 and took on its current structure only in the early 18th century; the bell tower was completed in the 20th century. Inside you will find a single nave with 4 chapels on each side: if you're not superstitious, you can visit the chapel of the Blessed Virgin of Protection, built on the site where an ancient cemetery once stood.
