Ancient Washhouse Via Mario Lupo ---

A long basin in white marble, divided into several sections, with an elegant cast iron covering and sheet metal plates. The Washhouse on via Lupo in Città Alta, built in 1891, still represents an exemplary model from a design standpoint. Equipped with a water supply system, an overflow drain, a process for draining dirty water after washing, and a channel for collecting water splashes produced during washing, the Washhouse proves to be efficient and functional. On the other hand, at that time the hygienic conditions in Bergamo were truly precarious: a cholera epidemic in 1884 had devastated the city and doctors had reported the poor quality of water in Città Alta which favored the spread of typhoid, a highly contagious disease
